Gneiss is the typical stone making up the structure of the Alpine mountains in our region.
It is a material suitable for many of the purposes for which stone is used: from building to road surfacing, from home interiors to gardens.
Although it is often referred to as "granite", in actual fact, gneiss differs from a macroscopic perspective, mainly due to its morphology with lamellar sheets (schist), some more closely-packed than others. This is not the case with granite, which instead features a harder structure that is more compact and uniform.
For this reason, among other things, indigenous gneiss is a very useful material for cleaving work with a certain thickness such as the production of kerbs, fences, arbours...
In this regard, we are particularly pleased that our quarry produces a stone with a surprising cleaving capacity for a gneiss from our region.
Despite having common characteristics from area to area, structure, quality and colour can differ within just a few miles. Even within the same quarry, it is not so rare to find strands of gneiss with characteristics not completely identical to one another. Often, the distinction can only be made by an expert eye.
Iragna gneiss is especially popular at national and international level and it is proud of its reputation. Its pleasant colour and its brilliance in the light, together with its weather resistance, make it a material for which there is constant demand.
